ORIGINAL STORY ON FROM SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) — A group of kids in Sherman, Texas is spending the summer break raising money for veterans experiencing homelessness.
As the saying goes, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” and that’s exactly what these kids are doing.
On a hot summer’s day, ice cold lemonade always hits the spot. But this lemonade stand is much more than a place to be refreshed.
Kennedy Wilson, her siblings and friends are spending their summer days raising money.
“We’re donating money for homeless veterans that need a house, a bed, kitchen,” Kennedy said.
They’re fundraising for the Veterans Administration Supportive Housing program through Texoma Council of Governments. The program provides rental assistance as well as items for a home.
“They supported our country and some of them go homeless and we want to help with their bedding, getting their houses and household needs and stuff like that,” Cole Kennedy said.
Judge John Roach, who is also a veteran, stopped by the stand, impressed with their idea.
“I never thought kids like that would understand what that meant to be homeless number one, but then to be a veteran who’s homeless number two,” Roach said.
Their smiles inspired Roach.
“It’s great to see that they recognize the problem and are willing to do something about it,” Roach said.
Veterans, like Roach, are the people who inspired these kids in the first place.
“It means a lot to me just to say something and improve someone’s life,” Cole said.
“We love them and we want to help them so much that they would have a happy life,” Kennedy said.
